Bridge Over Troubled Waters

Founded in 1970, this organization serves runaway, homeless, and high-risk youth. Services include substance abuse counseling, crisis intervention, housing, life-skills training, dental and medical services, runaway support, educational and transitional programs.

Pine Street Inn

Founded in 1969, Pine Street Inn provides shelter to some 2000 individuals, including almost 600 at emergency shelters at four locations, and provides street outreach to over 100 unsheltered people on a daily basis. One of its four facilities is the Yawkey House, which is connected to Pine Street Inn Women’s Clinic and provides emergency shelter to 125 women. Pine Street Inn also connects individuals with job training and placement services, other transitioning services and mental health support and substance abuse treatment.

Southampton Street Shelter-Boston and Woods Mullen Shelter

These are both shelters run by the Boston Public Health Commission (BPHC). Southampton Street is a men’s shelter in Boston’s South End with a capacity of over 400 nightly guests, while the Woods Mullen Shelter provides has 147 overnight beds for women. Both facilities provide meals, emergency clothing, medical care through Boston Healthcare for the Homeless Program, mental health services and case management referrals for job training, education and substance abuse counseling.

St. Francis House

St. Francis House is the largest day shelter in New England, providing basic, rehabilitative and housing services to individuals experiencing homelessness, helping up to 500 people a day. They serve more than 250,000 meals a year.

Boston Night Center

An overnight drop-in shelter operated by Bay Cove Human Services, open seven days a week from 8:30 pm to 6:30 am. The shelter provides food, but there are no beds or showers. It shelters men and women, and sobriety is not a condition for access.

Boston Office of Housing Stability

Boston Healthcare for the Homeless Program

Established in 1984, BHCHP is a program that provides health care for homeless men, women and children in the greater Boston area. It operates two inpatient units—the Barbara McInnis House and the Stacy Kirkpatrick House—as well as some 25 outpatient clinics. Aside from clinics at Boston Medical Center and Mass General Brigham, it runs clinics associated with homeless shelters, including several mentioned above and St. Mary’s Center for Women and Children. Outpatient services span general medicine, dental services, behavioral health, substance abuse and in-the-field care of chronically homeless patients.
